. . . and how could they not be??
We took the kids to trunk-or-treat on Wednesday night. We decorated the back of my car with some help from Jack's brother, and I took the kids from trunk to trunk while Jack and Brad handed out candy. I've never done a trunk-or-treat before, but I thought it worked really, really well - especially for the little ones who can't walk long distances, and who get bored anyway after 30 minutes. :)

Braden's Shower
We have had a busy week. :) After a field trip and the zoo, it was time for a baby shower. Jack's brother and sister-in-law are expecting a baby boy (Braden) on Christmas Day, and we celebrated his upcoming arrival, last weekend.
Miss Priss joined in the festivities.
Jack's grandmother decided to measure her seven-year-old great-granddaughter's waist as an estimate of how big the mom-to-be's waist must be.
She wasn't too far off, all things considered.

Boo at the Zoo
Last Saturday, we took the kids trick-or-treating at the zoo. We did this last year, also. But of course, in Carter's eyes, everything is better with Ashlyn around. :) Luckily her family has a zoo membership, too, so they also did Boo at the Zoo this year.
Corn Dawgs Field Trip
Carter's school went on a field trip last week to a pumpkin patch/corn maze. We went as a family two years ago, but Carter had so much more fun this time. We were among the last ones to leave for the day.

Eight Months
Miss E is eight months old today.
She's still roughly 16 pounds, according to my unscientific bathroom scale method of weighing myself with and without her in my arms. She comfortably wears size 6-9M clothes, though she still wears some 6M as well. (She actually is wearing Carter's handed-down Halloween pajamas, which were almost too big for him at four months old, but she fits them just fine at eight months.)
She is wearing a size 3 diaper when she wears disposables, but I've switched to mostly cloth. She wears disposables at night, and sometimes if we're running errands all day (like last Saturday's zoo trip), or if I have run out of clean cloth liners. (I have 12 liners, which doesn't quite last two days. I wash them every other day.)
Her eyes are still blue and her hair is starting to come in. People in public are always commenting on how smiley and happy she is.
She isn't quite crawling, but is really close. She has done a backwards army crawl a couple times, but hasn't figured out how to do it on purpose. She pulls herself up into a sitting position and is trying to pull herself onto her feet. When she sits on the hardwood floor, she uses her arms to scoot/spin herself around.
She nurses every 3-4 hours, and eats three meals of pureed/chopped foods per day. She sleeps about 11-1/2 hours at night, but usually wakes twice in that time. We're working on getting both kids to sleep through the night. :)
She's still a mama's girl all-around. Oh, and I swear, one day, she was laying on the changing table, looked at her brother and said "Carter." That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Half and Half
One day last week, Carter was climbing into the refrigerator to help himself to some milk. (Not an unusual occurrence.) But the gallon was pretty full so I told him to wait so I could help. He ignored me. A minute later, I repeated my instruction to wait.
Carter stepped back from the refrigerator, holding a pint-sized carton. He said "it's okay; I got the little purple one, way up high." The half and half. Right out of the carton. And he had the thick white mustache to groove it.
Later he requested "that creamy purple milk" in place of the usual skim. Awesome.

Word of the Week: Sitting
I came into E's room after nap time yesterday, and found her sitting up un bed. Guess it's time to lower her mattress.

Princess Laurie
No offense to the groom, but the wedding day belongs to the bride. Especially in Carter's eyes. Fresh off our trip to Disney, Carter apparently thought that Laurie had truly transformed into a princess. He could NOT take his eyes off her.Once he woke up, anyway. ;-) He actually slept (snored, no less) through almost the whole ceremony. Which was fine, since that gave him some extra endurance to break in his dancing shoes.
Taking a golf course walk with his grandpa.
Watching Laurie (the bride) . . .
Momentarily averting his attention from Laurie . . .
Eyes glued back on Princess Laurie. Moments later, he turned to me and said "Mom, (because he's decided he's too mature to say "mommy" and "daddy") take my picture with Laurie."
So I did. And he was soooo happy. :)
Ellyson let my grandmother hold her long enough for a picture.
We danced with the kids.
Carter decided to be silly and dunk his face into his chocolate mousse.
And while he was distracting me, Ellyson went all-in for my cake. Her frosting-covered hand was in her mouth when I noticed. Those two are working against me already!
Breaking down with Aunt "Leci" (he decided to stop using her full name this weekend).
And dancing with cousin Levi.
About the time Carter decided he was ready to leave. :)
Not bad: it was like 8:15.

Valley Forge
Our jet-setting family (Ellyson, Jack and myself have made three round-trip plane rides in the last six weeks) took off again this past weekend, for a Philadelphia-area wedding for my family. When gridlocked traffic thwarted our plans to make a pre-wedding trip into the city for some Liberty Bell and Rocky movie reenactment action, we decided to visit (the much-closer-to-the-wedding-anyway) Valley Forge. For those not familiar with Valley Forge (as I only am because I grew up in the region), it was a wintertime encampment for George Washington's troops during the winter of 1777-1778 during the Revolutionary War. It's a story of great hardship and endurance. It's also a spectacular setting for a long run - and I will have to return sometime if for no other reason than to run there.
George Washington's headquarters.
George Washington's headquarters.
Carter as the first president.
E as the first, first lady.
The bunks would have been a little cramped.

gBaby
So I've been using cloth gDiapers on Ellyson. Since I only bought a few, I'm substuting three diapers a day with cloth. But so far it's going well - easier than I thought it would be. They are three pieces (pictured below): a cloth cover, a vinyl snap-in liner and a cloth insert. Most of the time, only the cloth insert needs to be changed. I'm kind of liking the change of pace, and ordered some more. I also am branching into another style of cloth - I ordered a FuzziBunz and plan to try it out.
